Andrew
Jackson was the first of America's three 'first generation' presidents.
That is to say the parents of all three of these presidents were
born outside America· and in the case of Andrew Jackson that parental
home was Carrickfergus, Co Antrim. Ail three first generation presidents
came from Ulster families. Jackson's family had left Ulster in 1765
and Andrew Jackson himself was born in the Waxhaw district of South
Carolina on 15 March 1767.
Jackson
grew up during the American War of Independence, in which he lost
his mother and his two brothers. He was renowned in the harsh world
of the frontier and soon acquired renown as an indian fighter. At
the same time he pursued a career in the Law, and also served one
term as a member of the House of Representatives from Tennessee.

Andrew
Jackson is one of the heroic figures in American history, victor of the
Battle of New Orleans in January 1815 against the British and regarded
as the father of the present- day Democratic Party.
Known
as the'People's President', Jackson broke the mould of American politics,
rising to the presidency from humble origins, in marked contrast to his
predecessors in office. Jackson served two terms as chief executive, from
March 1829 to March 1837, before retiring to his Hermitage plantation
in Tennessee. It was here that he died peacefully in 1845.
